Every year roughly 400,000 Americans receive dialysis treatment, with 1/3rd of all patients being treated at a clinic operated by Fresenius Medical Care. Fresenius Medical Care also manufactures many of the dialysate concentrates used at their clinics, including GranuFlo and NaturaLyte, which were recalled by the FDA in 2012 due to a patient’s increased risk of sudden death from cardiac arrest when being treated with these products.
News reports have confirmed that Fresenius knew as early as 2011 of the increased likelihood of a patient dying while being treated with their GranuFlo and NaturaLyte products yet failed to inform the FDA or warn other dialysis centers using these same dialysate concentrates. As a result, it’s been estimated that 941 patients suffered cardiac arrest at Fresenius clinics, with numerous others experiencing similar, sometimes fatal, side effects at other dialysis clinics across the country.
