In 2011, European drug regulators in both France and Germany pulled Actos from the market citing serious safety concerns regarding this widely prescribed diabetes drug. Shortly thereafter, the FDA took action but instead of pulling the drug, they issued a new safety alert to the public cautioning patients that the use of Actos for over a year may increase their risk of bladder cancer.
There are currently over 1300 lawsuits pending in federal court filed on behalf of bladder cancer victims alleging that the manufacturer did not adequately warn the public about the significant dangers of taking Actos. Due to the widespread usage of this drug and the number of users exposed to these dangerous side effects, it is estimated that the number of claims could increase to well over 10,000 within the next year.
